Palya

High Resolution

I forgot to take a photo during the day so had to resort to taking one at night. This was the best I could do. We call it “Mixed Vegetable Palya”. Palya is a generic name (in Kannada) for cooked vegetables (similar to stew). This one in particular is a Palya with carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower, and string beans. The potatoes weren’t fully boiled, but it tasted pretty good regardless!

Adai

This is another south Indian delicacy that is extremely hard to come by. It is called “Adai Dose” (pronounced uh-dye). My mother (who learned how to make it from her mother) is one of the few people I know who can make it. It is one of the most delicious foods I’ve ever eaten.

Saaru

This is a traditional south Indian dish called Saaru. Some people call it Rasam (but of course, Saaru is what it is). It is typically eaten with rice. I’ve always loved how it looks when it’s boiling right before it’s done cooking.

Rosco

Sticking with this week’s theme of The Kitchen, I tried to capture a fun moment of most evenings in our house. Most evenings, we have a cook come and make us rotis for dinner. Part of her preparation often involves chopping up vegetables. My dog Rosco is always hovering around her in hope of getting some pieces of unused vegetables. This is him jumping up to pick up a piece of tomato.

Refrigerator

This week’s theme is “The Kitchen”, so here goes.

This isn’t a particularly artistic shot, but I’ve always been amazed by how much stuff my mother manages to cram into a refrigerator. I can never find anything in there, but somehow, she manages it.
